That’s one charged word. What does it mean? I suppose that depends on who you ask.
1) a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2) racial prejudice or discrimination
Another way that some may see things as just a difference in skin color, thinking that this particular trait makes others lesser humans. Why? Does the color of our skin matter at all? Does the country where our ancestors originate mean that we’re not as good as another person?
It’s ridiculous to think any of that. We’re all humans. We’re all of the same species, homo sapiens.
What causes racism to continue? I have to personally say the media and certain cretins that want it to continue. I don’t see racism every day. I don’t see prejudice every day. No, I don’t live in a big city, but you should go live in the country and see if things are that much different.
I’m not white, you see, nor am I black. I suppose you could say I’m yellow if you wanted to. One side of my family comes from South Korea. The other side? Europe and American Indian. What do I call myself? I’m American, born and raised. Hyphens? That’s a different rant altogether.
I experienced my share of what could be termed as racism growing up in rural America. Chink and Jap were names I heard often enough, but as I get older I’ve come to realize that children are mean and some teenagers are just ignorant. Some adults are still ignorant and that is no excuse. High school was the worst. College? The prejudice was almost non-existent.
People often say things before they think. We also type things out before we think. I imagine that’s part of what I’m doing now. I have often typed out things like this and them deleted them. I think I mainly wanted to get it off my chest even if no-one else would ever read it.
At this point I’m rambling, so I’ll stop. Just treat each other like humans. We’ll be better off for it.
