Put your feet up

One thing that we all need to learn to do is such a simple thing. We’ve got to learn how to relax and take some time for ourselves. I know, I know. There are so many things that need to be done! Well, those things will get done, so don’t worry so much about them and take call a time out!

We wake up in the morning, get ready for work, get the kids ready for school, get the pets ready for their day, and then we run around all day getting things done. It’s a lot of work being an adult and some of us just don’t know how to take the time to relax and live. I fully admit that I am one of those people. There is time at night when everything is done that I will be lazy, but here’s the thing. I haven’t had a week long vacation from work in about 14 years.

That’s a long time to rely on holidays and sick days as my only days off during that time. There are some days that I feel totally run down. Especially now being a single dad and a business owner. I spend 6 days a week working. Any other time is spent making sure that my son is being raised as best as I can or doing things around my house.

Maybe I really do need a break.

I fully intend on taking a little time off this year. It might be a weekend here and there, but it might also be me closing my store for a week this summer and taking my son somewhere. Who knows? Maybe I’ll even get over my dislike of beaches and do that. Or a cruise. I hear that those are fun. I’m still not sure about that.

The thing is… I like having fun. I actually do like to get out and do things. My problem has been that I haven’t made the time to do that.

Workaholic? It’s quite possibly true that I am one. My job isn’t hard. It’s easy. It’s just long hours over a long week it pays the bills and puts food on the table.

But that’s not what life is all about. I’ve been living, but I haven’t been LIVING. There’s a difference even though I used the same word. The way I figure it, I’ve been living for all this time without actually experiencing life. There were times when life was experienced, but I need to be better at that.

And so, plans will be made. Fun shall be had. Life WILL be experienced. More time will be spent outside when the weather allows it. What will we do? I don’t know, but things will be done. We’ll just play it by ear and see how things go.

So, stop for a moment. Go outside, take a deep breath, and really look around you. Go for a walk. Silence your cell phone. Leave your other electronics at home. Enjoy what nature puts on display every day even when it’s raining. Just be sure to wear a hat unless you don’t mind wet hair. Walk your dog a little bit longer than you normally would and maybe even a completely different route. Go fishing without bait and just sit on the river bank and enjoy the sounds of the water flowing past you. Find some family property with a forest and walk through it. Don’t trespass!

I feel like I’m going off on a bit of a tangent.

Well, the point is simply this: Don’t work your life away. Take some time for yourself. Take some time for your family.
